Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary is a small (24 Acre) wildlife sanctuary with a big heart, located approx 29km north of Hobart (approx 30 to 45 minute drive). The sanctuary is small family run operation with a strong focus on the rescue, rehabilitation, and preservation of native Australian animals, through various conservation projects, breeding programs, and research initiatives.
The sanctuary operates Tasmania’s largest 24/7 Wildlife Rescue Service, and during your visit you can take a peak behind the scenes of their wildlife hospital.
Admission tickets can be purchased on their website or at the gate. Entry costs (as of May 2024) $33.50 per adult and $19.50 per child (3 to 15 years old) or Family entry for 2 adults & 2 children is $97.
The sanctuary is open 365 days a year and entry includes very informative 30 minute keeper guided tours at 10am, 11:30am, 1:30pm & 3:30pm, as well as complimentary “Roo Food” if you would like to feed the resident Eastern Grey Kangaroos. The sanctuary has a small gift shop and cafe.
For an additional fee, you can have a 10 minute encounter with a Tawny Frogmouth, Wombat, Ringtail Possum or an Echidna.
If you are after a more hands on experience, you may want to join one of their 2.5 hour feeding tours at 10am, 1:30pm or night tour.
I would allow at least 2 hours to wander through Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, especially if you plan to do a keeper guided tour &/or animal encounter, and longer if you are joining a feeding tour. My pick would be the night tour, as you will get to experience both the diurnal & nocturnal wildlife.
